Tips & Tax
Taxes are generally not included in the stated price, most goods and services are subject to 15% HST and will be charged when you pay.
Tipping is expected in restaurants, bars, hair salons, when taking a taxi and in other service industries. The average is 15% of the total amount of bill.
Health Insurance
It is mandatory for international students to provide proof of health insurance when studying in Canada. Please bring your proof of health insurance on the first day of school. We can also arrange your health insurance through Guard Me International Insurance at a rate of $2/day. Please visit https://www.guard.me/ for policy information.
Driving
In Nova Scotia you must be at least 16 years old to get a driver's licence. Most car rental companies require a driver age of 21 years old.
Drinking
The legal drinking age is 19 years in Nova Scotia. Students under 19 are not permitted to buy alcohol and no one may buy alcohol for them. Anyone buying alcohol will be asked to provide proof of age.
Public Transportation
You can get around Halifax by bus or ferry. Adult and student cash fare is $2.75 each way (transfers are free), you can buy 10 tickets for $24.75, or a bus pass for a month for $82.5.
Smoking
You cannot smoke in any indoor workplaces or public spaces. Outdoor licensed areas and patios are also required to be smoke free. It is against the law to smoke in a vehicle when a minor (anyone under 19) is present.
