What is ACE TESOL?

The ACE TESOL Certificate is an English Language Teacher training course that prepares graduates to teach English as an additional or foreign language in Canada or internationally. The ACE TESOL Certificate is the only TESL-Canada approved teacher training certificate program in Halifax.

What does ACE stand for?
ACE stands for Advance Consulting for Education, a Canadian organization that has been offering teacher training, teacher professional development, curriculum design, program review and evaluation, and materials and resource development since 2001. ACE partners with school boards, community colleges, universities, non-profit organizations, and private language schools like ECLC to offer its programs. It is one of the largest providers of English teacher training in Canada.

What are the admission requirements?
As a candidate for the ACE TESOL certificate, you must:

  1. have a level of education that would allow for entry into Canada’s higher education system;
  2. have a degree from a Canadian university or an established equivalent from your own country if you wish to be eligible for TESL Canada Professional Certification;
  3. have a genuine interest in and display suitability for teaching English;
  4. commit to 90% attendance; and
  5. successfully complete the application process.

Are there required textbooks? How much are they?

What are the requirements if English is not my first language?
If you are not a native English speaker, you must fulfil the requirements listed above and also provide proof of English proficiency. Minimum required scores are as follows:

IELTS Academic: 7.0 overall with no band under 7

TOEFL iBT: 101 overall with minimum scores of 23 in listening, 24 in reading, 27 in speaking, and 27 in writing

*You can enroll in the ACE TESOL certificate without demonstrating the above English language proficiency; however, you will not be eligible to apply for TESL Canada Standard One Certification. No allowances will be made in the course requirements for trainees who do not provide proof of language proficiency.

What else do I need to know about the application process?
You will need to complete an application form, a grammar test, and an interview. The interview can be conducted in person or online and is an opportunity for the course tutors to provide you with information about the course, to explain how best to prepare, and to answer any questions you might have.

What does the ACE TESOL course cover?
The following topics are covered in the course:

  • Learning theory
  • Teaching speaking, teaching writing, teaching listening, and teaching reading

  • Managing your career

The ACE TESOL Certificate course places a strong emphasis on practical teaching skills and uses pair work, class discussions, and teaching demonstrations to enhance each trainee’s learning experience. The ACE TESOL curriculum is updated annually to reflect industry changes and to incorporate the latest language learning research.

Upon successful completion of the ACE TESOL Certificate you will be able to

  • Discuss foundational language-learning theory;
  • Design and implement activities for teaching speaking, writing, listening, and reading;
  • Design and implement activities for teaching grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation;
  • Plan and deliver lessons following a variety of lesson patterns;
  • Use classroom management techniques to effectively run your classes;
  • Differentiate the different standardized language proficiency tests; and
  • Create a personal career and professional development plan.

How long is the course and what is the schedule? Is there a teaching practicum?
The full-time course is four weeks in length and consists of 100 hours of coursework and twenty hours of practicum. The twenty-hour practicum includes six hours of observation of classes taught by experienced teachers. The practicum is split into two main pieces—the initial six hours of observations that form the basis of an Observation Report and fourteen hours of teaching paired with a practicum supervisor. The fourteen hours with a practicum supervisor are split into four hours of observation, seven hours of independent/team teaching, and three hours of solo teaching.

How is the course assessed? Is there an exam?

Assessment comprises an evaluation of a lesson observation report, a progress test, an achievement test, an objective-writing task, an evaluated micro-teaching, and a lesson-plan portfolio.

What time do classes start and finish each day?
The course runs from 8:45am to 3:30pm, Monday to Friday. There is one 15-minute break in the morning and one in the afternoon, and there will be one hour for lunch (12:00pm–1:00pm).

Where and when does the practicum take place?
The practicum will take place after completion of the 100-hour course. Trainees will arrange a suitable timetable with a supervisor.

What happens if I fail an assignment during the course?
In the ACE TESOL Certificate program, you have two opportunities to redo assignments if you do not reach a passing mark of 70%.

Who teaches the ACE TESOL program at ECLC?
The program is taught by experienced ECLC teachers who have undergone the ACE TESOL “Train the Trainer” program. Instructors have years of experience teaching in Canada and abroad and most have post-graduate qualifications (Masters in TESOL or curriculum design or Cambridge DELTA).
